Things to do when moving into a new Home:
Crossing the threshold and moving into a new home is a wonderfully exciting experience! You have worked, dreamed, planned and work hard to make this day a reality. There are several suggestions that we give our clients when they move into a new home. There is a good chance that there will be some emptying of boxes in your new future, but we will put aside the most obvious of guidance and dive into key tips to considering after moving in!
1. Test Every Appliance
Test every appliance, including fixtures like the furnace, air conditioner, humidifier, and thermostat. The agreement of purchase and sale contracts that we type up for our clients requires that these items be in good working order on closing. That being said, it’s worth checking again. Also, this is a great time to check your carbon monoxide detector and your fire alarms – replace any batteries at this time.

2. Deep Clean
Always do a deep clean. No matter how good the house may appear when you move in, it’s worth giving your home a deep clean. Let’s face it you would rather know the dirt you find in the first few days is yours versus someone else’s, right?!
3. Change Locks
Changing locks is commonly overlooked when someone moves into a new home. We typically trust that everything is fine, and in all likelihood, it will be fine. Your home will be secure. That being said, it’s worth upgrading your locks upon occupancy. You never know how many keys had been passed out to people over the years, whether that be to tenants, occupants or friends. Changing the locks is a simple task that can give you and your family peace of mind.

4. Pay Attention
Listen and pay attention to what your new home needs. Can you hear a leaking faucet? Or feel a draft through the windows? Do you hear the traffic outside? Are the floors squeakier than you remember? How humid is the basement? With time, patience, and paying attention to your new home’s needs, you will begin to discover a list of items that will need attention. This is nothing to be shocked about; the fact is that all houses require repair and upgrades along the way. You will also have your own subjective needs that you will wish to attend in the weeks, months, and years ahead.
