The Annex neighbourhood in Toronto is a top destination for people moving to the downtown core. Whether that’s a recent graduate coming from out of town, a work transfer within Canada, an overseas business person, a U.S. citizen or just someone looking to move downtown for greater accessibility. The Annex is an incredibly vibrant neighbourhood with lots of history. It’s no wonder that people love to move to the Annex.
1. Century Homes
The Annex is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Toronto. Many of the British business people migrated to Toronto 150 years ago. In doing so, they brought along some of the finest architects of the day. Considering that land was relatively cheap, being that it was farmland at that time, these architects were able to design some wonderful and grand homes that dot the Annex to this day. These large homes are filled with century features that distinguish Annex homes from nearly every other neighbourhood in the city.
An interesting fact as to why there are so few laneways behind houses in the Annex is that the Annex city planning was done before the cleanliness issues arose from horses at that time. To keep early Toronto residents healthy, the city decided it was best to have the horses at the back laneways, thereby keeping the streets cleaner. Thus new downtown Toronto neighbourhoods have laneways!
2. Tree-Lined Streets
Thankfully the residents of the Annex protected the century-old trees. This has ensured many wonderful treelined streets that residents and visitors can stroll. These Annex streets feel incredibly peaceful. This remains a major point of homebuyer interest. Many people love the canopy that shades the Annex on hot summer days.
3. Quaint Cafes & Restaurants
There are numerous quaint cafes and restaurants throughout the Annex. In fact, some of the best brunch spots in Toronto can be found in the Annex. During the warmer months of Spring and Summer, you can find some great patios in the Annex. Perhaps it’s the broad spectrum of International students in the Annex, but the Annex Sushi is great!
4. Peaceful Backyards
As mentioned above, the Annex does not have many laneways. This ultimately means that the Annex residents have more backyard space than many other downtown Toronto neighbourhoods. Add in the century-old trees, and you have yourself a very peaceful urban backyard to enjoy.
5. The Schools
Several great schools are dotting the Annex. There is obviously the higher education, post-secondary University of Toronto. There are several options like Royal St. George’s College for boys, flanked by Albany and Howland. Huron Junior Public School, University of Toronto Schools, Palmerston Public School, Howlett Academy. Not to mention the many daycares available for working parents of young children. Annex Montessori is an excellent option for children under the age of 6.
